Essential Curiosities in Musical Free Improvisations

Things not appearing to be what they are, at least on first glance. Things present but appearing to be something else. Musics hidden inside misleading sounds. Instruments not sounding like themselves. Rene Magritte’s painting of a pipe which equivocally states it is not a pipe.

In fact, it might be a bagpipe. Even better, a guitar mistaken for bagpipe, or a bagpipe that sounds like a guitar. Or a guitar that sounds like either a pipe or a bag. Or maybe it was a sack; couldn’t tell which it was.

By sound alone, and in many other ways, it’s hard to tell a bag from a sack.
